A company with $200 million in total debt and $20 million in cash faces a fundamentally different risk profile than a company with $200 million in debt and $150 million in cash, even if their income statements are identical. The cash-poor company has no runway to absorb a revenue decline, a spike in interest rates, or a credit market disruption that prevents refinancing. The cash-rich company has eighteen months of operating room to navigate the same challenges.
The maturity schedule — disclosed in the footnotes to the financial statements — reveals the timing of the refinancing risk. A company whose debt matures in 2028 faces no immediate refinancing pressure regardless of current interest rates. A company with $100 million maturing in the next twelve months must either generate sufficient cash flow to repay the debt, refinance at prevailing rates (which may be significantly higher than the original rate), or negotiate an extension with creditors who may demand onerous terms. The maturity wall — the concentration of debt maturities in a narrow time window — is the event that converts a zombie from a slowly deteriorating holding into an acute loss.
