Ethics & Standards

The State Street Journal is a publication of the Massachusetts Society of Journalism. We cover the financial markets, economy, and business landscape of New England and the nation. We hold ourselves to the following standards in all of our reporting.

Truth and Accuracy

We verify facts before publication. When we cannot independently verify a claim, we say so. We do not publish rumors, speculation, or unverified allegations as established fact. Financial data is sourced from regulatory filings, official disclosures, and verified primary sources. When we make errors, we correct them promptly and transparently.

Independence

Our editorial decisions are not influenced by the financial institutions, companies, or individuals we cover. No source, subject, or stakeholder receives advance review or approval of our coverage. The State Street Journal answers to its readers and to no one else. Our reporters do not hold positions in the securities or instruments they cover.

Source Standards

We identify our sources wherever possible. When a source requires confidentiality as a condition of providing material information in the public interest, we will protect that confidence. Anonymous sourcing is used only when the information is essential, the source is credible and directly knowledgeable, and the information cannot be obtained through other means. We do not grant anonymity to sources making attacks on individuals.

Financial Conflicts

No member of our editorial staff may hold personal financial positions that create a conflict of interest with their coverage area. Staff members are required to disclose any financial interest in a company before it is assigned for coverage. Disclosures are maintained on file and available for review upon request.

Corrections

When we publish an error of fact, we correct it at the top of the article, with a correction notice that states what was wrong and what is correct, and that notes the date of the correction. We do not alter the historical record of what we published without notation. Every correction is permanent and indexed.

Editorial Pillar

The State Street Journal is not a left publication. It is not a right publication. It is a financial journal of record for New England. Our editorial lens on policy and economic questions is this: does this advance or protect the interests of the United States and its citizens? Facts are reported accurately. Framing is pro-Republic. Adversaries of the Republic are identified as such. We do not dress foreign interference, market manipulation, or regulatory capture in neutral language.
